Ghana has lost a prominent political figure with the passing of Akua Donkor, founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP). Akua Donkor, who was well-known for her dedication to advocating for farmers’ and women’s rights, died on October 28, 2024, at Ridge Hospital in Accra.
A family source confirmed her passing on October 29, 2024, revealing that she died on Monday. Known for her bold and outspoken manner, Akua Donkor was a spirited political activist who often championed the concerns of grassroots communities. Over her political career, she became a recognizable and unique voice, often captivating audiences with her candid approach to public issues. Despite facing financial challenges, she persisted in her presidential aspirations, distinguishing herself by running for the presidency multiple times. She was listed as the third candidate for the upcoming 2024 election, marking her commitment to bringing change to Ghana’s political landscape.
Akua Donkor’s political journey began when she was elected Assemblywoman for Herman, and her first attempt at the presidency came in 2012. Although she was later disqualified by the Electoral Commission for failing to meet eligibility requirements, she continued to push her agenda, even backing candidates like Papa Kwesi Nduom. In 2016, her GFP headquarters in Kabu, Eastern Region, was destroyed by fire, but she remained undeterred, rebuilding and continuing her political efforts.
Her passing closes a significant chapter in Ghana’s political history, leaving behind a legacy of advocacy and grassroots engagement.
