Kenyan President William Ruto has called for the creation of a single currency for Africa to simplify trade across the continent. Speaking at the 22nd COMESA Summit in Lusaka, Zambia, Ruto emphasized that businesses should not struggle with currency exchange issues when trading within Africa.
He urged leaders to eliminate non-tariff barriers and fast-track regional integration to unlock Africa’s full economic potential. COMESA Chairman and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi highlighted that the bloc has a market of 580 million people and a GDP of over $720 billion, making stronger trade cooperation essential.
The summit also focused on boosting infrastructure, ensuring stability, and tapping into the region’s $100 billion in untapped trade opportunities. Additionally, Somalia announced its formal membership in COMESA, further expanding regional collaboration.
