The Nigerian Navy just strengthened its fight against maritime crime. The service formally added three new ships and three advanced helicopters to its fleet on May 30th. This major upgrade aims to secure Nigeria’s waters and boost regional safety.
New Assets for Immediate Impact
Specifically, the commissioned vessels are:
- NNS IKOGOSI (a former South Korean naval ship)
- NNS SHERE
- NNS FORA
Additionally, three AgustaWestland AW109ST helicopters joined the fleet. Naval Chief Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla stated these assets will “greatly enhance our capacity to dominate Nigerian waters and prevent criminal elements from operating freely.”
A Symbol of International Partnership
Notably, South Korea gifted the NNS IKOGOSI. Ambassador Kim Pankyu (retired Navy Admiral) called it “a symbol of enduring friendship and trust.”
He explained: “Korea and Nigeria collaborate closely… Our military cooperation has grown through training exchanges. This vessel once safeguarded our waters – now it will protect Nigeria’s interests.”
Furthermore, Pankyu stressed shared security goals: “Today’s maritime challenges include piracy and trafficking. West African waters are vital globally. Securing them matters to Nigeria, Korea, and the world.”
Focus on Future Security & More to Come
Importantly, CNS Ogalla revealed more equipment is coming in 2025:
- Two 76-meter patrol ships from Turkey
- Three 46-meter fast boats from China
He emphasized: “These assets will significantly boost our readiness. Nigerian waters will no longer be a refuge for crime. We can now respond faster and more effectively.”
Crucially, Ogalla thanked President Tinubu for his support, linking secure seas to economic growth: “The President’s commitment reflects his determination to protect Nigeria and boost prosperity. We envision secure waters that attract investment.”
Training & Welfare Key to Success
Finally, the Naval Chief highlighted that trained crews are vital. He promised continued focus on technical training and personnel welfare to maintain the new assets and keep morale high.
