The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere , has sounded the alarm over what it describes as a deliberate and dangerous conspiracy to undermine President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration . The group alleges that certain individuals are falsely branding his government as a “Yoruba government” in an attempt to stir ethnic division and derail his re-election bid.
In a strongly worded press statement issued on Friday and signed by its National Organising Secretary, Apagun Omololu , Afenifere condemned the alleged plot, citing revelations made by Dr. Sandra Duru regarding her conversation with suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan . According to Afenifere, Akpoti-Uduaghan admitted to a clandestine effort to provoke tribal sentiments against Tinubu’s presidency.
“This is no light accusation. It is a revelation that demands reflection from patriots and repudiation from all who still hold Nigeria dear,” the group declared.
Tinubu’s Mandate: A National, Not Tribal, Leadership
Afenifere emphasized that President Tinubu’s leadership was not a product of ethnic favoritism but a result of democratic choice.
“Let it be said, plainly and without ambiguity, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government is not a Yoruba government. It is a Nigerian government. He did not ascend to the presidency by tribal inheritance but by democratic choice — the result of votes cast in faith by Nigerians of every tongue, creed, and religion,” the group stated.
The group described the ethnic stereotyping of Tinubu’s administration as dishonest and dangerous tribal opportunism, urging all Nigerians of conscience to reject such divisive tactics.
Drawing Parallels with Past Administrations
Afenifere drew attention to the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari , noting that no similar tribal conspiracies were hatched during his eight years in office.
“We remind the nation: When President Muhammadu Buhari held office for eight years, no one branded his leadership as a ‘Fulani government’. No tribal coalition was formed to deny him a second term on the grounds of ethnicity. He was allowed to serve out his mandate in full and rightly so. The same principle of equity and continuity must apply now,” the group argued.
Afenifere warned against double standards, stating that justice and fairness must prevail for Tinubu to complete his constitutional mandate.
“Let no one demand justice only when it suits them, but deny it when it is owed to others. President Tinubu shall serve his full term of eight years, by the will of the good people of this country and under the watch of the Constitution. To suggest otherwise is to play Russian roulette with our national destiny,” the group cautioned.
Praise for Dr. Sandra Duru’s Courage
Afenifere commended Dr. Sandra Duru for exposing the alleged conspiracy, describing her actions as a demonstration of integrity and courage.
“Afenifere salutes Dr. Sandra Duru for her uncommon courage for speaking truth not only to power, but to conspiracy. Her voice is a reminder that integrity still walks among us, and that silence, in the face of wickedness, is not an option for those who love this country,” the group stated.
Defense of Senate President Godswill Akpabio
The group also rose in defense of the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio , condemning smear campaigns and false allegations against him. Afenifere accused opponents of weaponizing baseless accusations to tarnish Akpabio’s reputation due to his collaboration with Tinubu.
“We condemn in the strongest terms the campaign of calumny and false allegations against the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, a man whose only crime, it appears, is that he dares to cooperate and collaborate with the President in the spirit of statesmanship and progress,” the group said.
Afenifere decried the invasion of private lives and the fabrication of charges as political tools, warning that such tactics undermine decency and justice.
“To smear a man’s name, fabricate charges, and unleash innuendo on his children, his home, and his honour — that is not politics. That is malice in its rawest form,” the statement added.
Condemnation of Domestic Arsonists and International Agendas
Afenifere accused certain individuals of orchestrating chaos domestically while seeking foreign validation for their actions. The group likened such behavior to setting fire to one’s own seat in a cinema and running out shouting “Fire!”
“It is selfishness that seeks to burn down the image of the nation to satisfy the ego of one person who believes that except she has her way, the country should not have peace,” the group stated.
Afenifere maintained that Nigeria is not a tribal empire and warned that no amount of blackmail or conspiracy would derail the country’s constitutional path.
“Nigeria is not a personal or tribal empire. Our nation will not bow to tribal blackmail. It will not bend to invented narratives. And it will not break under the weight of conspiracy,” the group affirmed.
Call for Unity and Constitutional Order
The group urged Nigerians to rally behind truth, justice, and constitutional order, rejecting agents of sabotage who threaten national stability.
“We have come too far to be dragged backwards by petty ambition disguised as activism. Let us reject the agents of sabotage not because they threaten one man, but because they threaten all of us,” Afenifere concluded.
