James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, has been acquitted and discharged by the High Court after facing criminal charges related to allegations of dual citizenship. The ruling, which was delivered on April 9, 2025, marks the end of a lengthy legal battle. The prosecution had claimed that Quayson held Canadian citizenship when he filed to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections, an act they argued violated Ghana’s constitution.
Throughout the case, Quayson consistently denied the allegations, asserting that he had renounced his Canadian citizenship prior to his nomination. Following the court’s decision, Quayson expressed his relief, as the legal cloud over his parliamentary seat has now been lifted.
The court found that the prosecution failed to prove its case, ruling that Quayson had made no false declarations in his 2020 nomination forms. It was noted that Quayson had already filed an application to renounce his Canadian citizenship before submitting his nomination, demonstrating that he had no dishonest intent.
The court also highlighted inconsistencies in the evidence presented by the prosecution, particularly in the passport summary sheet and statutory declarations from witnesses, which undermined the credibility of the case. As a result, the judge concluded that there was no need for Quayson to open his defence.
Having faced five charges, including forgery and perjury, Quayson can now continue his work as a legislator without further legal hindrances.
