Tinubu Shifts Democracy Day Address to National Assembly Floor
In a last-minute change, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cancelled his planned Democracy Day national broadcast , opting instead to deliver his speech before a joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12, 2025 —marking Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day .
The update was confirmed by Segun Imohiosen , Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), in a statement released on Wednesday.
“Due to H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled.”
This marks a rare shift from the usual televised broadcast, reflecting a more institutional and legislative-centered commemoration of Nigeria’s democratic milestones.
Democracy Day Events Still Proceeding as Planned
Despite the cancellation of the broadcast, other Democracy Day programs will continue as previously announced.
A public lecture is still set for 4:00 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja . This event will bring together policymakers, civil society leaders, and media personalities to reflect on the state of democracy in Nigeria.
The president’s decision to speak directly to lawmakers shows his commitment to engaging with the legislative arm of government, especially during a period of heightened political activity and reform discussions.
Why the Change Matters
Tinubu’s choice to address the National Assembly rather than the general public via broadcast suggests an effort to strengthen executive-legislative relations .
It also underscores the administration’s focus on parliamentary engagement , particularly as debates over economic reforms, security policies, and electoral preparations intensify across the country.
While some analysts see this as a move toward more formalized governance , others are disappointed that the public will miss out on a direct national message from the president on such a symbolic day.
