Tuber: Togo Produced 2.51 million Tonnes in 2024, Up 5.5% YoY

Togo produced 2,515,000 tonnes of tubers in 2024, against 2,406,614 tonnes in 2023. The Ministry of Agriculture reported this data in the Citizens’ Budget, highlighting a steady upward trend since 2022, when production rose by 7.5% to 2,238,529 tonnes. The Plateaux and Centrale regions produced the most, 768,864 tonnes and 519,708 tonnes, respectively. The increased output coincides with Lomé’s 2024-2028 plan to develop the root and tuber sector. Under this plan, the government seeks to raise CFA2.34 billion to fund development actions. The Ministry of Agriculture and the Interprofessional Council for the Root and Tuber Plant Sector (CIFPRT) developed the four-year strategy. It was validated in 2023.

Peasant Farmers in Volta Region Urged to Adopt Eco-Friendly Farming.

Minister of Environment Inspects Ashanti Region’s Land Restoration Project.

A team from the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation (MESTI), led by Minister Ophelia Mensah Hayford, visited the Ashanti Region to evaluate progress on the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project (GLRSSMP). The project, valued at $103.36 million, aims to improve natural resource management and enhance benefits in savannah and cocoa forest landscapes.During the visit, the team met with local farmers and project stakeholders, gathering feedback and addressing challenges. The initiative, active in 26 communities across eight regions, supports over 58,000 farmers. The Minister expressed satisfaction with the results and highlighted the importance of tree planting to combat climate change. She also pledged continued support to restore degraded lands and enhance soil health.

Galamsey Devastates Over 2,000 Hectares of Cocoa Farms in Ashanti Region.

The illegal mining phenomenon, commonly known as galamsey, has wreaked havoc on cocoa farms in the Ashanti Region, with more than 2,000 hectares reported destroyed.
