Peter Obi Slams Tinubu Over Democracy, Borrowing Habits

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of weakening Nigeria’s democracy and taking the country into economic decline since assuming office two years ago.

Obi made the remarks during Democracy Day celebrations on Thursday, June 12, criticizing Tinubu’s leadership and calling for urgent reforms.

“After a close look at this administration, it’s clear that many things are not working as they should,” Obi stated.

He also claimed that Tinubu’s government has borrowed more money than the last three Nigerian presidents combined—a shocking accusation that has sparked widespread debate.

Democracy in Recession Under Tinubu – Obi

In his statement, Obi argued that Nigeria’s democratic institutions have weakened under Tinubu’s leadership.

“The system is in recession—not just economically, but politically and institutionally,” he said.

Obi pointed to rising corruption, poor governance, and policy failures as key signs of democratic backsliding during the current administration.

He urged citizens to hold leaders accountable and demand transparency in how public funds are used.
