Obi Demands National Emergency Over Benue Violence
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the recent wave of killings in Benue State .
More than 200 lives were reportedly lost in a single attack, with many victims being women, children, soldiers, and displaced persons.
In a statement released on Sunday, Obi said the tragedy has become too frequent in Nigerian life , and called for a national emergency to address the situation.
He described the attacks as not just violence, but a failure of leadership and a moral stain on the country’s conscience.
“Every life lost is a Nigerian life—each one precious, each one irreplaceable.”
Government Must Act, Not Just React
Obi questioned the ability of the government at all levels to protect citizens when such large-scale loss of life continues unchecked.
“The primary duty of any government is to protect lives and property,” he said.
“When it repeatedly fails, we must ask: What kind of nation are we leaving for our children?”
He urged authorities to go beyond official visits and public statements and take real, decisive action.
“Actions must speak louder than words,” Obi added.
A Call of Solidarity With Benue Residents
To the people of Benue, Obi expressed deep empathy:
“Your pain is our pain. The blood of your loved ones cries out for justice.”
He stressed that the survival of communities under threat must be treated as urgent and addressed comprehensively.
“A safe, secure Benue is not too much to ask,” he said.
“It is our moral and national duty.”
This Is Not the Nigeria We Deserve
Obi warned against normalizing mass killings and called for an end to the cycle of violence.
“This is not the Nigeria we deserve, nor the Nigeria we aspire to,” he said.
“We must end this bloodshed. We must reclaim our humanity.”
His remarks come amid growing concern over insecurity across several parts of the country.
