The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly criticized President John Mahama’s suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
In an interview on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, announced that the party would embark on a series of protests to register their displeasure.
“We will agitate, we will demonstrate, and let the whole world know that President Mahama is not the man we know. He is not protecting our democracy, and the judiciary is under attack,” he stated.
He emphasized that the suspension is not just a personal affront to Chief Justice Torkornoo but an attack on Ghana’s democracy and the judiciary.
On Tuesday, April 22, President Mahama suspended the Chief Justice following consultation with the Council of State and the establishment of a committee to investigate three petitions seeking her removal.
In a statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency cited Article 146(6) of the Constitution, which mandates the establishment of a committee to probe allegations against a superior court judge if a prima facie case is established.
Although the move has been recognized as constitutional, it has sparked strong criticism from a section of Ghanaians.

Education is a lifeline, and I will continue to fight for every child […]

President John Dramani Mahama has set up a 5-member committee to handle the inquiry. There is no time frame on when the inquiry should be completed. Even though the 1992 Constitution indicates that the proceedings should be held in camera, the full contents of the petitions have surfaced on social media. The three petitions are said to be from a group called The Shining Stars of Ghana with one Kingsley Agyei as Chairman and Convenor. The other petitioners are Ayamga Yakubu Akolgo and Daniel Ofori. The committee is chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, a Justice on the Supreme Court bench. Justice Pwamang was appointed to the Supreme Court bench in 2015. Other members are […]

Interpol dismantles human trafficking-fraud ring in joint Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire operation
In a major transnational crackdown, Interpol has announced the successful dismantling of a human trafficking ring that exploited victims through fraudulent job offers and pyramid schemes. The joint operation between Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana led to the arrest of two suspects and the rescue of 33 victims from Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, and Togo. According to Interpol, the criminal network lured victims with fake employment offers abroad, most notably in Canada. The case came to light after a Ghanaian father raised the alarm when his two daughters paid nearly $9,000 in fees to a recruiter who claimed to facilitate jobs in Canada, only for them to be trafficked to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. In a disturbing revelation, the victims were held against their will and subjected to psychological and physical coercion. They were forced to perpetuate the scam by recruiting new […]
