Military should have apologised after denying coup plot – Falana

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has faulted the Nigerian military for failing to apologise to citizens after initially denying any coup plot, only to later confirm that some officers would face trial over an alleged scheme to overthrow the government. He said people in authority must learn to take Nigerians seriously and correct themselves publicly when previous statements turn out to be misleading. Falana recalled that in October 2025 the military dismissed claims linking the cancellation of the Independence Day parade to a coup plot as “false and malicious” and capable of creating unnecessary tension. He argued that once investigations showed the matter went beyond mere indiscipline, the military ought to have admitted this and apologised instead of quietly reversing its position. The lawyer also questioned the plan to try the detained officers by court martial, insisting that allegations […]

NITDA, NBC forge new alliance on digital transformation, media oversight

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) have agreed to deepen collaboration on digital transformation and media regulation as technology and broadcasting increasingly converge in Nigeria. The partnership was sealed during a courtesy visit by NBC Director‑General Charles Ebuebu to NITDA Director‑General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi in Abuja. Abdullahi said NITDA is undergoing an internal transformation from a traditional civil service body into a high‑velocity, smart public sector institution capable of responding to fast‑changing digital realities. He explained that, because most staff came from the mainstream public service, the agency launched a cultural reorientation focused on people, mindset reset, capacity building and a work culture that supports innovation and accountability. He outlined NITDA’s digital transformation strategy built on three pillars: people, processes and technology, stressing that tools alone cannot deliver value without skilled personnel and […]

Tension as youths protest heavy security in Onitsha markets

Tension has gripped the commercial city of Onitsha as traders and youths protested the closure of Onitsha Market ordered by Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo. Fierce‑looking security operatives in armoured personnel carriers were stationed at the market entrances, while many traders watched from a distance. Soludo had vowed to shut the market for one week over traders’ continued observance of the Monday sit‑at‑home, warning that if they still failed to open next Monday, the closure could be extended to one month and the market even demolished. He stated that anyone unwilling to trade on Mondays should “leave Anambra and go elsewhere,” insisting the state cannot afford further economic losses. On Tuesday, residents were surprised to see heavy patrols by security operatives around the market area as youths trooped out, chanting solidarity songs for jailed IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. National grid fails again, second system disturbance in 5 days

Nigeria’s national electricity grid failed again on Tuesday morning around 11am, throwing many homes and businesses into darkness in what is the second nationwide outage in five days. Data from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), a unit of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), showed total generation from just two GENCOs at about 219 megawatts at the time of the disturbance. Head of Communications at NISO, Mr Kazah Akau, downplayed the incident, saying it was “not actually a collapse but a little disturbance” and promised that an official statement would be issued. However, the sharp drop in available power once again highlighted the fragility of the grid and the impact of repeated disruptions on the already strained economy. Load profile data from the 11 distribution companies indicated a total allocation of roughly 220MW being shared nationwide. Benin and Ibadan […]

Prioritise key reforms, CISLAC tells National Assembly

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has urged the 10th National Assembly to prioritise governance, accountability and key legislative reforms as it resumes sitting for 2026. The group warned lawmakers against early electioneering ahead of the 2027 polls, saying political distractions could undermine their work. In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), CISLAC described 2026 as a critical year for both President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and the legislature, with citizens expecting concrete results from policies rolled out since 2023. Rafsanjani cautioned that legislative productivity often declines in pre‑election periods and noted that proposals to hold general elections as early as November 2026 could heighten public anxiety and weaken governance. CISLAC said Nigeria’s harsh economic realities, insecurity, rising debt and declining public trust demand a focused, responsive and accountable parliament rather than one seen […]

Sachet alcohol ban: activists protest at NAFDAC Lagos office

Consumer rights advocates on Monday stormed the Lagos office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to protest the planned enforcement of a ban on sachet alcoholic beverages. The demonstration was organised by the Coalition for the Protection of Consumers’ Rights and led by Comrade Olufemi Lawson. Lawson criticised the proposed enforcement as economically insensitive and poorly timed, warning it could worsen unemployment and hardship. He argued that manufacturers, distributors and consumers would all be hit, and questioned the policy’s consistency given that many of the affected products were previously tested, registered and approved by NAFDAC. He insisted that underage drinking is an enforcement problem, not a product problem, noting that sachet drinks are clearly labelled “not for sale to persons under 18”. The coalition also disputed claims of excessively high alcohol content, saying licensed […]

APC chieftain hails Gov Yusuf’s defection as turning point for Kano

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, Ahmed Dankabo, has described Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s reported defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC as a defining moment in the state’s political history. In a statement issued in Abuja, he said the long‑anticipated move marks a watershed for Kano politics and a major milestone in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic. Dankabo, a member of the APC 2023 Presidential Campaign Council in Kano, said the people of the state stand to gain the most from the governor’s decision, pointing to the prospect of improved governance and stronger alignment with federal policies. He argued that Yusuf’s switch has triggered a “political tsunami” across Kano, with citizens from all walks of life embracing the ruling party. “The momentum on the ground is overwhelming,” he said, insisting that Kano […]
