JAMB suspends exam town selection for 2026 UTME candidates in Ekiti

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has temporarily suspended the selection of examination towns for 2026 UTME candidates registering in Ekiti State. JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said the pause is to allow the board restructure exam town locations to bring centres closer to candidates and reduce transport challenges on exam days. He explained that the 2026 registration commenced before structural anomalies were detected in the configuration of examination towns in Ekiti. According to him, the irregularities made urgent adjustments necessary in the interest of candidates, prompting the temporary halt of town selection in the state. During this period, candidates will not be able to select any examination town in Ekiti until the reconfiguration is completed. Benjamin assured that the process would be concluded soon and apologised for any inconvenience caused to candidates during the ongoing registration exercise. He noted […]

State govts to share electricity subsidy costs with FG — Presidency

The Federal Government says state governments will now jointly bear the cost of electricity subsidy along with the centre, following a directive by President Bola Tinubu to restructure how power subsidies are funded. According to Vanguard, funding for electricity subsidies will be channelled through the Power Assistance Consumers Fund (PCAF), a government backed pool created to support low income and vulnerable households with targeted bill relief instead of blanket subsidies. Director General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Tanimu Yakubu, disclosed the new policy at a 2026 Post Budget Preparation workshop in Abuja, saying states that enjoy the political benefits of low electricity tariffs must also help fill the financing gap created by subsidies. In remarks delivered on his behalf by Director of Expenditure (Social), Yusuf Muhammed, Yakubu quoted the President as directing that a “clearer framework” be operationalised […]

Police urge NLC to shelve Tuesday’s planned protest in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) FCT Council to shelve its planned protest scheduled for Tuesday, February 3, 2026, in Abuja. The NLC had fixed the protest to demand payment of outstanding allowances owed workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). However, the police said fresh intelligence indicated that proscribed and non state actors were allegedly planning to infiltrate and hijack the demonstration. In a statement, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josehine Adeh, said the command fully recognises citizens’ constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and protest and remains committed to providing security for all lawful activities. She warned, however, that reports at the command’s disposal showed plans by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria and other elements to use the protest for purposes “inimical to public peace and security.” […]

Gen Musa: How coup attempt was foiled at planning stage

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa has revealed how Nigerian security agencies foiled a planned coup at the “planning stage”, describing the plotters as a disgruntled group led by a colonel who failed promotion to brigadier general. Speaking on Channels Television, Musa said the officer, angered by his failure to meet promotion requirements, began mobilising other aggrieved elements within the Armed Forces, but joint monitoring by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS) and other security outfits exposed the plot early. He explained that this was why the military initially denied rumours of a coup last October, insisting investigators needed time to identify the real conspirators and avoid arresting innocent officers. The Defence Headquarters has now confirmed that investigations indicted 16 officers who will face court martial, though Musa declined to name the mastermind […]

Brains behind alleged coup knew the consequences – Defence Minister

Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), says the military officers detained over the recent alleged coup plot were fully aware of the gravity of their actions before moving against the government. Speaking in an interview with Turkish public broadcaster TRT, Musa said the suspects “must have made up their minds when they decided to do this and must have considered their families,” insisting they are prepared to “face the wrath” if found guilty. His comments followed complaints from some relatives who alleged witch hunt in the arrests. The Defence Headquarters had earlier confirmed that investigations conducted under military procedures uncovered involvement of some personnel in an alleged plot to overthrow the government. It said those found culpable would be arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and service regulations. Musa assured that the […]
