Femi Kuti, fils du légendaire Fela Kuti, a vivement réagi aux récentes déclarations de la Recording Academy (Grammy Awards), qui a reconnu le batteur Tony Allen comme co-créateur de l’afrobeat. Dans une vidéo virale, Femi a fermement rejeté cette version de l’histoire, défendant l’héritage de son père comme seul fondateur de ce genre musical révolutionnaire.
« Mon père a tout composé. Il a étudié la musique. Chaque partie des morceaux venait de lui, y compris les lignes de batterie que l’on attribue aujourd’hui à Tony Allen », déclare Femi avec conviction.
Une vision artistique solitaire et rigoureuse
Selon Femi, Fela Kuti travaillait de manière totalement indépendante, en construisant pas à pas chaque morceau, des percussions aux cuivres, en passant par la guitare et la basse.
« J’étais là. J’ai vu comment il composait. Il pouvait passer des semaines à concevoir une chanson, puis des mois à la peaufiner. Rien n’était laissé au hasard », confie-t-il.
Femi Kuti insiste : Tony Allen a appris son style de batterie de Fela lui-même, et les récits qui prétendent le contraire relèvent de la réécriture de l’histoire, voire de manipulations médiatiques orchestrées par des intérêts étrangers.
Une vérité à transmettre aux générations futures
Âgé de 62 ans, Femi affirme qu’il est de son devoir de protéger l’intégrité historique de l’afrobeat pour les jeunes artistes et fans à travers le monde.
« Il faut arrêter de dire “Fela a dit”. Montrez-moi les preuves. Où est l’interview ? Où est l’enregistrement ? Cela fait cinq ans que j’attends. »
Il dénonce une tentative de réhabilitation injustifiée et appelle à ne pas laisser l’histoire du mouvement afrobeat être détournée.
