Ghanaian actress Ama K. Abebrese has shared her candid thoughts on the challenges of pursuing a career in acting. In an interview with Joy Prime’s Roselyn Felli on the show Changes, Abebrese described acting as one of the most disappointing professions due to its inherent difficulties.
Abebrese explained, “Acting requires a thick skin. You might audition multiple times and feel confident about a role, only to be turned down. This can be disheartening, as it builds you up and then lets you down.” She highlighted that she has auditioned for more roles than she has actually landed, recounting losing over twenty roles in the past year alone.
Despite these setbacks, Abebrese remains resilient, viewing each rejection as a learning opportunity that sharpens her skills. She stressed that not every role is meant for her, and sometimes understanding who got the role can provide clarity.
Over her career, Abebrese has appeared in around twenty films, including notable ones like Beast of No Nation, Sinking Sands, and Azali. She values the impact and quality of her work over the quantity of roles.
Abebrese’s reflections underscore the often-overlooked difficulties actors face and the perseverance required to succeed in the industry.
