On March 21, 2025, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the Ashanti Regional Minister, led a successful operation against illegal mining activities in the New Ebudiase area along the Pra River. The operation was carried out by the Regional Anti-Galamsey Taskforce, which includes agencies such as National Security, Police, Mineral Commission, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
During the operation, the taskforce seized 7 excavators, demobilized 5 more, and confiscated other equipment including 2 generators, 2 motorbikes, and pump-action guns. These items were taken to the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) for further action, reinforcing the government’s zero-tolerance approach to illegal mining, known as galamsey.
Dr. Amoakohene reiterated the government’s commitment to responsible mining practices. He emphasized that miners must avoid forest reserves, river bodies, roadside mining, and ensure that mining pits are covered to prevent accidents. He stated that the government would support those interested in mining responsibly, but would continue to clamp down on those engaging in illegal mining activities that harm the environment and local communities.
This operation is part of broader efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources and safeguard the environment from the devastating effects of illegal mining. The government is determined to ensure sustainable mining practices and reduce the environmental damage caused by galamsey.
