ActionAid and NOCID Address Teacher Retention Challenges in Oti Region.

ActionAid Ghana, in partnership with the Network of Communities in Development (NOCID), held a stakeholder engagement in the Oti Region to tackle teacher retention issues. The event, themed “Addressing the Challenges of Teacher Retention in Oti Region,” was attended by local education officials and representatives.

Madam Agnes Afua Obour of NOCID emphasized the need for solutions to retain teachers in rural areas, highlighting the critical role of education in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4. She noted that despite existing policies, the region struggles with high teacher turnover due to inadequate infrastructure and poor living conditions.

Mrs. Irene Jacquelinda Attabra, the Caretaker Regional Director of Education, explained that challenges such as poor infrastructure and high pupil-teacher ratios contribute to teacher attrition. She also mentioned the negative impact of local attitudes and lack of support from some stakeholders.

Recommendations included providing special allowances, improving housing and infrastructure, and offering incentives to motivate and retain teachers. The discussion underscored the importance of addressing these issues to ensure a stable and effective education system in the Oti Region.
