Muslims in Ghana will soon enjoy two public holidays for Eid al-Fitr, following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive to amend the Public Holidays Act.
Announcing the decision on February 28, 2025, during the sod-cutting ceremony for a permanent Hajj Village in Accra, Mahama stated that the additional holiday would allow Muslims more time for spiritual reflection, community gatherings, and acts of charity.
He has instructed the legal team at the Presidency, led by Marietta Brew, to initiate the amendment process, ensuring the two-day holiday takes effect starting this year’s Ramadan celebrations.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the Muslim community, citing major initiatives like the National Mosque and the planned Hajj Village as part of broader efforts to enhance religious infrastructure in Ghana.
