Mahama Reaffirms Stance on Gender and Marriage, Pushes for Anti-LGBTQ Bill

President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his position on traditional family values, stating that there are only two genders—male and female—and that marriage should strictly be between a man and a woman.

Speaking at a clergy fellowship in Accra on February 28, 2025, Mahama emphasized that these values align with Ghanaian societal principles. He also disclosed his plans to consult with the Speaker of Parliament to reintroduce the Proper Family Values Bill, which aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities.

The bill had previously been passed by Parliament but was left unsigned by former President Nana Akufo-Addo. Mahama now seeks to champion it as a government initiative rather than a private motion.

Beyond social issues, Mahama addressed Ghana’s economic challenges, pledging to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, and create jobs through initiatives such as his 24-hour economy policy. He urged religious leaders to support his administration through prayers and moral guidance.
