Kumasi Traders Decry Filth as City Struggles with Waste Management

The rising sanitation crisis in Kumasi has left traders and residents frustrated, as market centers and major streets remain clogged with filth. Despite claims by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) that 90% of daily waste is cleared, a visit to areas like Adum, Kejetia, and Asafo Fish Market paints a different picture.

Traders blame irregular waste collection for the worsening conditions, with overflowing bins and uncollected garbage creating health hazards. Some artisans near WAEC Asawasi say drains in their area haven’t been desilted since 2014, contributing to a foul stench.

KMA’s Head of Waste Management, Prosper Kotoka, admitted the assembly is overwhelmed but insists waste management is a shared responsibility, citing public indiscipline. Meanwhile, residents are calling for more proactive action to keep Kumasi clean.
