Gregory Afoko Granted GH₵500K Bail After 9 Years in Custody

After spending nearly a decade behind bars, Gregory Afoko, accused of the 2015 murder of NPP’s Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, has been granted bail. The Accra High Court, presided over by Justice Marie-Louise Simmons, approved his release on a GH₵500,000 bail with two sureties—one of whom must justify the bond with a landed property. Afoko is also required to report to the police every two weeks.

Afoko was initially arrested in connection with Mahama’s death, which prosecutors say was caused by an acid attack. His alleged accomplice, Asabke Alangdi, has already been convicted and sentenced to death. A jury had previously returned a split verdict, acquitting Afoko of murder, but a retrial is expected.

This is not the first time Afoko has been granted bail—he was previously released in 2019, only for the decision to be overturned. Now, after years of legal battles, he finally has another chance at temporary freedom.
