The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has announced new measures to improve healthcare access for persons with disabilities. These initiatives include disability-friendly health facilities, job opportunities, and better access to assistive services.
During a meeting with the National Disability Council and the National Disability Federation on February 19, 2025, GHS Director-General, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, emphasized the importance of inclusive healthcare. He outlined plans to strengthen disability focal teams at regional and district levels, introduce peer review mechanisms, and establish clear guidelines to make healthcare more accessible.
Additionally, the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) pledged $4 million toward improving rehabilitation services, renovating health facilities, and enhancing data management for children with disabilities.
While welcoming these efforts, disability advocates raised concerns about ongoing accessibility challenges. They urged the government to introduce Braille labeling on medication, structured career paths for sign language interpreters, and free primary healthcare for persons with disabilities.
A follow-up meeting has been scheduled to address these concerns and explore further improvements.
