Bawumia Urged to Step Aside as NPP Looks to Rebuild

Mussa Dankwah, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, believes that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be better off if Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, their 2024 flagbearer and former Vice President, decides not to contest in the 2028 elections. He argues that the issues leading to Bawumia’s defeat are deep-rooted and systemic, making it necessary for the party to rebuild without him.

Speaking on Good Evening Ghana on Metro TV, Dankwah stated that it would be in the party’s best interest if Bawumia voluntarily steps aside rather than being forced out. This, he said, would allow the NPP to begin its restructuring process early.

Following the 2024 election loss, the NPP formed a committee in January 2025 to analyze their performance. Party Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim acknowledged the disappointing results but reassured members that the party would learn from the setback.

Official figures from the Electoral Commission showed that John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) won the election with 6,328,397 votes (56.55%), defeating Bawumia, who secured 4,657,304 votes (41.61%). Despite the loss, Ntim emphasized that the NPP remains committed to its vision for Ghana and will conduct a thorough review to prepare for the future.
