The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is introducing a courier system to clear a backlog of over 75,000 uncollected passports across Ghana. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the initiative on The KeyPoints program on February 8, stating that an audit will be conducted to identify applicants and ensure delivery.
“We will roll out a courier system so applicants can receive their passports wherever they are,” he said, emphasizing the need for a clear identification process.
In addition to this, the ministry is implementing digital reforms to improve passport processing and efficiency.
Diplomatic Passport Review
The government is also reviewing the issuance of diplomatic passports to prevent misuse and protect Ghana’s international reputation. Ablakwa stressed that stricter enforcement of existing laws, such as NLC Decree 155, will ensure only eligible individuals receive diplomatic passports.
“The credibility of our passports affects how we are treated at embassies and airports. We must restore their respect,” he noted.
The minister assured Ghanaians that these reforms will enhance passport accessibility and uphold national security.
