Guntingli’s Mounting Waste Crisis: Residents Fear Health Disaster.

For years, the Guntingli community in the Yendi Municipality has been plagued by uncollected refuse dumps, posing serious health risks to residents. The area has at least four massive dump sites that have become breeding grounds for diseases, attracting flies and producing a foul stench that spreads through the neighborhood.

Children have been spotted playing near the refuse, while some residents resort to open defecation at the sites. The wind frequently carries plastic waste across the community, worsening the situation.

Locals have raised concerns about the potential outbreak of sanitation-related diseases. Baba Huzaimatu, a resident, lamented that the waste was contaminating water sources, making daily life unbearable. Another resident, Musah Latifa, whose shop is near one of the dump sites, expressed frustration over the persistent odor, urging authorities to intervene before the situation escalates.

Despite repeated complaints, Assembly Member Mohammed Mahi Darifu stated that the Yendi Municipal Assembly has failed to take action, citing a broken-down refuse collection truck. Efforts to get a response from municipal officials have so far been unsuccessful.
