Ghana’s Hanna Serwaa Tetteh has been appointed as the United Nations Special Envoy to Libya and Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), replacing Senegal’s Abdoulaye Bathily. The announcement was made by UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday, pending approval by the UN Security Council.
Tetteh, a former Ghanaian Foreign Minister, takes on the challenging role at a time when Libya remains politically divided between two rival governments. She will focus on fostering stability, overseeing planned elections, and addressing humanitarian concerns in the war-torn country.
With vast experience in diplomacy, including serving as the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Tetteh has received strong backing from the EU and the Arab League, who trust in her ability to navigate Libya’s complex political landscape.
