Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has dismissed claims that his involvement in Freemasonry conflicts with Christian beliefs, asserting that the group is not anti-Christian.
His remarks come in response to concerns from the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference, which recently reiterated that Catholicism and Freemasonry are incompatible. A letter signed by Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi reaffirmed the Church’s stance, emphasizing that Freemasonry contradicts Christian teachings.
Speaking on Channel One TV, Afenyo-Markin stated that he had not received any official letter from the Church regarding the matter. He expressed openness to dialogue with Church leaders and clarified that if the Church took a firm stand against his affiliation, he would consider switching to the Anglican Church.
The Effutu MP also noted that while many Catholics involved in Freemasonry hesitate to discuss their membership, he has no such concerns. He reaffirmed his commitment to Catholicism and welcomed discussions on the topic.
The debate over the compatibility of Freemasonry with Christianity remains a hot topic in Ghana’s religious and public discourse.
