Nungua Livestock Breeding Station Under Threat as Private Developers Take Over Land.

The Nungua Livestock Breeding Station, located along the Tema Motorway in the Tema West Municipality, is facing encroachment from private developers who have begun constructing apartments and erecting boundary walls on the land. Shockingly, the station’s main office has been walled off by a developer, forcing staff to plead for access to their workplace daily.

During a visit to the facility, the newly appointed Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, expressed strong opposition to the takeover. He vowed to investigate the land acquisition process and seek government intervention. Opoku also announced plans to petition the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) preparatory committee to secure the land in the national interest.

Despite an ongoing relocation plan to move the breeding station to Amrahia in the Adentan Municipality, the process is incomplete, making the forced eviction of staff unlawful. The station’s manager, Dr. Dennis Owusu Adjei, revealed that workers’ bungalows were demolished a few years ago and that developers now plan to tear down the animal production facility, which houses pigs, grasscutters, and poultry.

The Deputy Manager, Mrs. Bridget Wiredu, urged the minister to act swiftly to prevent further destruction and also called for long-overdue promotions for staff, some of whom have worked there for over 16 years without advancement.

The situation raises concerns about land security for state-owned agricultural facilities and the fate of Ghana’s livestock breeding programs.
