Ghana Revokes Mining Licences to Tackle Galamsey Crisis
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources in Ghana has revoked all mining licenses granted after December 7, 2024, as part of the government's efforts to combat illegal mining, locally known as galamsey. The move aims to address environmental damage caused by mining activities, particularly in forest reserves and water bodies.During a press briefing, Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah stated that seven out of nine forest reserves affected by illegal mining have already been restored. He explained that the decision to revoke these mining licenses followed recommendations from key agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Minerals Commission, the Forestry Commission, and the Water Resources Commission.Buah emphasized that these licenses were issued hastily and without following proper procedures, and he confirmed that individuals affected by the revocation can appeal the decision, ensuring that due process is followed.
