Just four days after the military's Operation Halt took decisive action against illegal mining (galamsey) activities, the Birim River in Anyinam has returned to its polluted, murky brown state. The government deployed over 100 armed soldiers to clear miners from key water bodies, including the Birim River, where extensive pollution has become a serious issue.On October 10, military forces, in collaboration with the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, seized and destroyed three changfan machines used by illegal miners along the riverbank. Despite this effort, the pollution has quickly resurfaced, raising concerns over the sustainability of anti-galamsey operations.The task force also targeted other illegal mining sites, destroying additional changfan machines and water-pumping equipment along the Pra River in the Central Region. This ongoing battle to save Ghana’s water bodies continues as authorities grapple with the persistent illegal mining problem.
Tensions are high in Anweaso, a community in the Eastern Region's Denkyembour District, following the mysterious disappearance of 25-year-old Danjuma Laliatu. She vanished after an altercation with Kwadwo Ahenfie, a neighboring farmer, over a land boundary dispute on October 7, 2024.Laliatu returned home injured, claiming she had been attacked by Ahenfie but managed to escape. After resting, she went back to her farm to collect her belongings but never returned. Ahenfie was arrested by the Akwatia Police the next day but was released the same day, and his family celebrated his release, angering Laliatu’s relatives and community members.The family is frustrated with the police’s handling of the case and is calling for the Inspector General of Police to intervene and conduct a thorough investigation.
A sudden surge of large black mosquitoes with white markings has been reported in four districts of Ghana's Eastern Region, leading to increased malaria cases. These mosquitoes, prevalent in cocoa farms, have caused over 300 hospitalizations. The E-waste Fund Administrator, Nana Afua Ababio, has announced that a new E-waste collection centre will open in Koforidua on October 15. The Koforidua Divisional Police Command has launched a manhunt for a car theft syndicate that has stolen five vehicles in under a week in the Eastern Regional capital. Among the stolen vehicles are a Hyundai Elantra belonging to a senior official from the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly and another Hyundai Elantra from the owner of Olive Mall.The syndicate uses master keys and remotes to access vehicles at victims’ homes or businesses.
