On April 4, 2025, China announced that it would impose a retaliatory 34% tariff on all U.S. imports, effective April 10. This move comes in response to a similar tariff of the same rate imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this week as part of his "Liberation Day" trade package. The U.S. 34% tariff is an addition to previously established duties, pushing the overall tariff rate on Chinese goods to potentially over 54%. Dow tumbles 1,000 points after China retaliates against Trump’s tariffs

US stocks opened sharply lower Friday after China retaliated against the United States for President Donald Trump’s tariffs in a tit-for-tat that escalates a global trade war. The Dow fell 1,000 points, or 2.5%, and the broader S&P 500 was 2.6% lower. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was 3% lower and flirting with bear-market territory — a decline of 20% from its peak in December. Investors had been fearful that a dramatic escalation of the trade war could plunge the US and global economies into a recession. JPMorgan analysts said Thursday that America’s economy and the broader world economy both had a 60% chance of sinking into a recession this year. The analysts also said odds of a recession would rise if countries began to retaliate against the United States — and China did so Friday. Retaliation raises the risk of further escalation and could […]

Senate Feud: Court Bars Akpabio, Natasha From Speaking To Press

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining all parties involved in the suit filed by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio and three others from making public comments about the case. Justice Binta Nyako, who presided over the matter, gave the directive on Friday after Akpabio’s lawyer, Kehinde Ogunwumiju, SAS, raised concerns that Akpoti-Uduaghan had been granting television interviews regarding the lawsuit. In her ruling, Justice Nyako stated that “all parties and their lawyers must refrain from granting press interviews related to the case.” The court further ruled that proceedings must not be streamed on social media platforms, effectively limiting public discourse on the case while it remains before the judiciary.
