Ghana Unveils Stricter Regulations for Okada Riders to Boost Road Safety
Ghana's government is implementing new regulations for the operation of commercial motorcycles and tricycles (known as okada and pragyia) to enhance road safety and accountability. Under the proposed changes to the Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (LI 2180), riders must be at least 25 years old and registered with a licensed commercial union or company.The new rules, announced by the Minister of Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, during a national consultation on April 7, 2025, aim to curb the rising number of accidents involving motorcycles. In addition to the age requirement, operators will need a valid national ID, a commercial rider's license, and to pass a proficiency test.To ensure passenger safety, riders must wear certified helmets and provide helmets for passengers.
