BREAKING: Senate Panel Recommends 6-month Suspension For Kogi Central Senator Natasha

The Senate Committee on Public Conduct, Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, on Thursday, recommended the suspension of the Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, for a period of six months. The Committee’s chairman, Senator Neda Imasuen, who presented the panel’s report at plenary, said Senator Natasha was guilty of all allegations against her as she failed to submit herself to the legislative Committee for the review of her conduct. Senators are currently taking their turns to debate the report subject to further amendments of the Committee’s recommendations and their final adoption through voice vote. Agriculture, Environment: Togo Secures $5.7M from South Korea

South Korea recently provided Togo with $5.7 million to support two major projects–one to boost agriculture and another to fight deforestation. The projects were officially launched on February 28, 2025, in Lomé, in the presence of Moon Dongkyu, representing the South Korean ambassador in Togo. The first project, "Development of Socio-Economic Infrastructures to Support Rural Communities in Togo", received $3.5 million. It will focus on improving rural infrastructure by installing post-harvest processing solutions, solar-powered systems for agricultural processing, and clean drinking water facilities. Additionally, it will include an incubation program to train young people and women in managing environmentally sustainable businesses. The second project, "Strengthening People's Resilience to Climate Change through Sustainable Management of Forest Resources", received $2.2 million. National Cybersecurity Agency Adds Three New Options to Public e-Services Platform

 The Togolese public e-services platform recently welcomed three new options. The options were integrated by the National Cybersecurity Agency (ANCy).  Effectively, the platform’s users can now submit, online, applications for qualifying service providers and security products, and directly request approvals from assessment centers. They can also track their applications in real time and communicate with ANCy using a built-in chat tool. The move falls under the government’s efforts to modernize public administration while addressing the need for secure online transactions in a world increasingly reliant on digital tools. Launched in 2021, the ANCy was set up to regulate and secure digital activities in Togo.

Russian Sweets Behemoth UNICONF Eyes Togo’s Cocoa

Russia’s leading sweets maker, United Confectioners (UNICONF), is eyeing Togo’s cocoa market. A delegation from the firm was in Lomé from February to March 4. They were led by Sergey Lyubimov, one of its executives. The team met with various local businesspeople during their stay. They mostly discussed Uniconf's plans to invest in processing and marketing Togo’s cocoa. The Russian delegation took stock of Togolese regulations and tax policies to evaluate potential partnerships and long-term operations. According to Togo’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, partnering with Uniconf could boost the local cocoa industry, fostering industrialization and job creation. Cocoa is Togo's third most valuable cash crop, behind cotton and coffee. Founded in 1804, UNICONF is the leading confectionery company in Russia and Eastern Europe. Present in 45 countries, the giant produces around 360,000 tonnes of sweets yearly.

Togo Takes Helm of Federation of Professional Associations of Banks

 Togo has taken over the leadership of the Federal Council of the Federation of Professional Associations of Banks and Financial Institutions of the WAEMU (FAPBEF-UEMOA). Guy Martial Awona, Managing Director of Orabank-Togo, officially assumed the role on March 4, 2025, during a meeting in Lomé. Guy Martial Awona succeeds Senegalese Boccar Sy, whose term has ended. Over the next two years, Awona will focus on steering reforms in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU) banking sector to address pressing economic challenges. As chairman, Awona is tasked with stabilizing the financial system, improving access to credit for small and medium-sized enterprises, and enhancing financial inclusion through digitization. His agenda also includes modernizing banking services to meet international standards and strengthening financial security systems. Togo Adopts New Tools to Fight Neglected Tropical Diseases Better

 Last week, Togo approved two new management guides on neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). The documents were validated on February 28 in Kpalimé. They are expected to help better diagnose and treat skin diseases in Togo, especially in its rural parts.  This effort is part of a project titled "Improving the Diagnosis and Treatment of Cutaneous NTDs in Togo Using Information and Communication Technologies." The Togolese Society of Dermatology and Sexually Transmitted Infections (SOTODERM) leads the project with support from the German Association for the Fight Against Leprosy and Tuberculosis (DAHW) and the Togolese Ministry of Health. The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) funds the program.  The guides provide health workers with descriptions of skin conditions, screening methods, and treatment protocols tailored to local needs. Climate Resilience: Togo to Get $28M from Green Climate Fund

Togo is about to receive CFA17 billion (roughly $28 million U.S. dollars) from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) via the West African Development Bank (BOAD). The funding will boost the country's climate resilience.  The BOAD recently secured the GCF’s approval for the project, which will directly help Togo's most at-risk communities. This is the first time that Togo has received financing from the GCF. In detail, the package will help improve climate information services, multi-hazard early warning systems, and local adaptation efforts.  Set to be carried out over five years, the initiative will be steered by Togo’s Civil Protection Agency (ANPC) and monitored by the Ministry of Security and Civil Protection. Dubai-based Bushrana Group Eyes Togo as Next African Market

 The Bushrana Group, a Dubai-based investment group, could soon enter Togo’s agri-food industry. Mamoun Mekki, Managing Director of Bushrana Group, disclosed the intention last week while visiting Lomé. Mekki was in the Togolese capital to explore business opportunities. In Togo, the Bushrana Group plans to build a food production plant at the Industrial Platform of Adétikopé (PIA). If implemented, the project will help boost the food supply in surrounding landlocked countries. During the visit, Richard Kangbeni, Togo’s Minister for the Maritime Economy, reiterated the Togolese government’s support and promised incentives to ease investment by Bushrana. The two sides will continue talks in this framework. Across Africa, the Bushrana Group operates in many sectors, including energy, telecommunications, finance, and tourism. It is present in Mozambique, South Africa, and Sudan. Coming to Togo aligns with the group’s global expansion strategy.

Coris Bank Togo: Balance Sheets Total at CFA528bln in Sept. 2024, against CFA428bln in Sept. 2021

The Togolese branch of Coris Bank International, part of a Burkina Faso banking group, reported that its total assets grew from CFA428 billion in 2021 to CFA528 billion by September 2024, thus up 23%.  The bank's director, Alassane Kaboré, reported the figure on the sidelines of the lender's 10th anniversary on February 20, in Lomé. The surge confirms the bank's growth dynamic; In 2021, Coris was Togo’s third largest bank by assets. By the end of September 2024, customer deposits were at CFA310 billion. Meanwhile, credits net of provisions were at CFA206.9 billion,  up 15.7% compared to September 2023. Coris Bank Togo claims to take a unique approach to banking and currently serves over 79,000 banking customers and 196,000 users of its e-wallet service. Togo is taking steps to protect itself from the Lassa virus, which has been reported in some West African countries. Concerned about the disease potentially spreading to Togo, the country’s health authorities have increased and recommended surveillance and prevention measures nationwide. The Ministry of Health deployed measures to better monitor health centers, communities, and entry points. They are also preparing to handle suspected cases and conducting public awareness campaigns to help people better protect themselves and properly handle suspected cases.
