An unemployed 45-year-old woman, Faustina Foli, has been remanded by the Accra Circuit Court for allegedly defrauding an insurance officer of GH₵265,000. Foli promised to secure a U.S. visa and three Canadian visas but failed to deliver.
Charged with defrauding by false pretenses, Foli pleaded not guilty. Her bail application was rejected by the presiding judge, Mr. Isaac Addo, after the prosecution argued she had previously absconded while on bail for similar offenses.
The complainant, Daniel Acquay, was reportedly deceived by Foli’s claim that her fiancé worked at the Canadian High Commission and could procure visas at reduced costs. Acquay paid GH₵265,000 for the visas, after which Foli disappeared.
In a caution statement, Foli admitted collecting the money but claimed to have handed it to an individual named “Kojo.” However, she provided no useful information to aid the police investigation.
The case has been adjourned to December 24, 2024, with investigations extending to the Canadian High Commission to verify the alleged involvement of Foli’s fiancé.
