The incident occurred on October 25, 2024, during the Nkusukum Odambea Festival preparations in Mankessim.
Witnesses report that tensions escalated between factions during a ritual procession meant for slaughtering a cow, which led to the chief allegedly pulling out a firearm and shooting Mekyeawo in the head. During a court hearing on October 29, the prosecution requested additional time for investigations, citing the case’s sensitive nature. The presiding judge, Anita Sheila Crabbe, granted the request, remanding the accused until the next hearing scheduled for November 12, 2024.
Community leaders have expressed disappointment and outrage over the incident, with calls for justice and a swift resolution to the case.
