UNYF Extends Sallah Greetings, Calls for Urgent Action on Poverty
As Muslims across Nigeria celebrate Eid-el-Kabir (Eid-ul-Adha) 2025 , the Unified Nigeria Youth Forum (UNYF) has extended warm wishes to the Muslim community, urging Nigerians to reflect on the values of sacrifice, compassion, and unity that the festival promotes.
In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Toriah Olajide Filani , the youth group prayed for peace, national unity, and economic recovery for the country.
“We felicitate with our Muslim brothers and sisters on this joyous occasion,” the statement read.
“May this season bring hope, healing, and prosperity to all.”
However, the group quickly shifted focus from celebration to concern, highlighting how many Nigerians are unable to enjoy the festival due to worsening living conditions.
Many Nigerians Celebrating Without Dignity
UNYF expressed alarm over the growing number of citizens who rely on alms and charity to observe Sallah—a sign of deepening poverty and governance failure.
“It is disturbing that despite the doubling of FAAC allocations, the suffering of the people continues without relief.”
The forum called out political leaders for failing to translate increased revenue into visible improvements in public welfare, especially for the most vulnerable.
Time for Leaders To Prioritize Governance Over 2027
While acknowledging the approaching 2027 elections, UNYF urged political leaders to focus on governance , not just campaign strategies.
“The least our leaders should be thinking about is how to retain power in the next election. Their energy should be channeled toward solving real problems.”
The group listed top national challenges including:
- Hunger and food insecurity
- Unemployment
- Health system failures
- Insecurity and crime
- Rising number of out-of-school children
UNYF warned that these issues threaten national stability and must be addressed now—not after the next election cycle.
Nigerian Youths Must Demand Accountability Now
With youths making up over 70% of Nigeria’s voting population , the forum urged young people to demand transparency and good governance —not only during campaigns but consistently throughout leadership tenures.
“This is not the time for politics—it is time for governance.”
The group emphasized that Nigerian youths have the numbers and the moral authority to push for change:
“Leaders must be held accountable now, not later. Young Nigerians must take ownership of their future by engaging constructively and continuously.”
UNYF also called on other youth organizations to join forces in holding public officials responsible, regardless of political or religious affiliations.
“Leadership is not a tool for personal gain. It is a sacred duty to serve humanity with sincerity.”
