Bawumia: NDC Had No Campaign Message, Only Used NPP’s Internal Criticisms in 2024 Elections

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, a key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has sharply criticized the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), claiming that their 2024 election campaign lacked any original or coherent message. According to Dr. Bawumia, the NDC merely amplified internal criticisms and comments made by NPP members, using them as their main political weapon. Speaking during a post-election strategic review session with party members, Dr. Bawumia said: "The NDC had no solid campaign message of their own. They simply took what we said against each other and made it their entire election strategy." He emphasized that instead of articulating a clear policy agenda or vision for the country, the NDC relied on highlighting divisions, grievances, and mistakes within the ruling party. This approach, according to Dr. Bawumia, resonated with a public already disillusioned by economic hardship and governance […]

Dr. Bawumia Attributes 2024 Election Defeat to High Cost of Living and Arrogance of Power

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s Vice President and a leading figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has openly acknowledged that the party's defeat in the 2024 general elections was largely due to the high cost of living and a perception of arrogance among those in power. Addressing party members during a recent internal review meeting, Dr. Bawumia referenced multiple post-election reports and independent assessments that pointed to widespread public dissatisfaction with the government's economic management and attitude. According to him, these two critical factors—soaring living expenses and a disconnection from the ordinary citizen—played decisive roles in shaping voter sentiment. "Every single report we have received, both internal and external, points to the fact that the high cost of living weighed heavily on the electorate," Dr. Bawumia said. "Added to that was the perception that we became arrogant in our governance, […]

Kennedy Agyapong Urges NPP to Grant Amnesty and Reconcile with Alan Kyerematen Ahead of 2028 Elections

Central, has advocated for a comprehensive amnesty for all suspended and estranged party members. According to Agyapong, embracing unity and reconciliation is critical if the NPP is to reclaim and maintain political dominance in the years ahead. Speaking during an interaction with party faithfuls and stakeholders, Agyapong emphasized that the NPP must "rise above internal divisions" and strategically rebuild bridges with those who have broken away, including former presidential hopeful Alan Kyerematen, who now leads the Movement for Change. "If we are serious about winning the 2028 election, we must grant amnesty to all suspended members and invite those who have left, including Alan, to rejoin the party. We must put the past behind us and focus on the bigger picture — victory for the NPP and progress for Ghana," Agyapong declared. The Case for Amnesty and Reconciliation Kennedy Agyapong’s […]

What Luigi Mangione supporters want you to know

“Katie” arrived at the Luigi Mangione protest in downtown Manhattan on Friday wearing a black shirt with a large photo of the 26-year-old suspected shooter. “But Daddy I Love Him,” the shirt read in pink, the title of a recent Taylor Swift song. “I just thought it was fun and cute and something to show his face and show support,” she said. Did she actually, as the shirt said, love Mangione? “I don’t know if you can love someone you’ve never met,” she responded. “I love whoever made that action to stand for health care … They really took a stand. I’m actually surprised something like this hasn’t happened before.” “Whoever did commit that act, I really do see him as a hero and a martyr.” Katie – who declined to provide her last name – was one of a […]

UK deports 43 immigration offenders to Ghana and Nigeria

The group included 15 failed asylum seekers and 11 foreign nationals who had completed prison sentences in the UK. Seven of the individuals reportedly returned voluntarily. The charter flight, which took off on Thursday, marks the second deportation operation to Ghana and Nigeria since the current government assumed office, bringing the total number of returnees to the two countries to 87. UK officials say the operation reflects a growing partnership between the British government and its counterparts in Accra and Abuja to curb irregular migration and enforce immigration laws.“This flight demonstrates how international partnerships deliver on working people’s priorities for swift returns and secure borders,” said Angela Eagle, the UK’s Minister for Border Security and Asylum. “Through the Plan for Change, we’re going further in restoring order to a broken system, accelerating returns of those with no right to be […]

I won’t renew Zoomlion contract if sweepers’ salary remains GH¢250 – Basintale declares

Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Malik Basintale, has made a firm declaration not to renew the existing contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited if the current wage of GH¢250 for sanitation workers remains unchanged. In a strongly worded Facebook post on Friday, 25 April, Basintale criticised the current terms of engagement, describing them as exploitative and unjust to the Ghanaian youth. His comments follow growing public pressure, particularly from investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni, who has long campaigned against the contract’s renewal, citing poor treatment of workers and breach of contract terms. Echoing similar sentiments, Basintale asserted that the present arrangement is a “rip-off” of poor Ghanaians and cannot be allowed to continue under the current administration. “All my life, I have fought for integrity and for the better placement of the youth and people of […]

Minority on Health Committee appeals to TTH doctors to return to work

The Minority Caucus on Health has expressed concern over the suspension of emergency and outpatient services at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). The strike action, which began on Thursday, April 24, 2025, is in protest of what the doctors describe as a hostile working environment, lack of basic medical supplies, and mistreatment by senior government officials. Patients who visited the hospital for care were left frustrated, as the consulting rooms were empty with no doctors present. Two days into the strike, the Caucus appealed to the health workers to urgently reconsider their decision, citing serious concerns over the impact on public health. “We do not underestimate the gravity of such a resolution, and we fully recognize that it stems from a deep sense of frustration, indignity, and structural neglect that must not be ignored,” parts of a statement read. The statement […]

IMF to Ghana, African nations: Tighten fiscal policies as global risks rise

Speaking at a press conference during the IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings, Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva warned that while Africa’s long-term prospects remain strong, immediate policy tightening is needed to navigate looming economic shocks. While Africa has been home to some of the world’s fastest-growing economies in recent years, Ms Georgieva cautioned that low-income and conflict-affected nations risk falling further behind due to the indirect effects of weakening global demand. The IMF has already revised down growth projections for the continent. The impact of current economic shocks varies across Africa. Oil-exporting nations like Nigeria face budget pressures from falling crude prices, while oil importers, including Ghana, benefit from lower energy costs. However, Ghana’s recent decision to raise interest rates for the first time in nearly three years—contrasting with Egypt’s rate cut—reflects the differing policy needs across African economies.Ms Georgieva outlined key recommendations […]
