Passport fee reduction to take effect after Parliamentary approval – Minister

Article arrow_drop_down

Although the government had announced a 30 per cent cut in the cost of an ordinary passport, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, clarified in a Facebook post that the new fee will only take effect when Parliament reconvenes.

The revised fee is part of a broader set of passport reforms scheduled to begin on Monday, April 28, 2025, but the price change remains subject to legislative approval.

Mr Ablakwa had earlier informed Parliament on March 13, 2025, that the reduction was in response to public concerns over affordability.

He assured that the government remained committed to keeping passport costs reasonable while maintaining robust security standards.

Parliament is currently on recess and is expected to resume on a yet-to-be-announced date in May.

An amendment to the Fees and Charges Act is anticipated to be presented when the House reconvenes.

Smuggling Routes & Tax Drivers Smugglers frequently route gold through Togo, Burkina Faso, and Mali, taking advantage of lax border controls. The 2019 withholding tax hike (3%) pushed many miners toward illicit channels, with a subsequent reduction in 2022 and full removal in 2023 only partially reversing the trend. 3. Impact & Reform In […]
