Agalga Calls for National Unity in Addressing Bawku Crisis, Praises Otumfuo’s Mediation Efforts

Speaking on Saturday, April 12, 2025, Builsa North MP James Agalga raised serious concerns about the escalating violence in Bawku, describing it as a national crisis that now threatens neighboring communities. He strongly advocated support for the peace talks led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

“I speak with a heavy heart. I’ve lived in Bawku and know the people personally—both Kusasis and Mamprusis. I consider them family,” Agalga said.

He warned that the conflict has spilled over into surrounding areas such as Binduri, Bulenga, and Walewale, making travel increasingly unsafe. “This situation predates the NDC. Even under President Akufo-Addo, it worsened to the point where parts of the region, like the stretch between Bulenga and Walewale, became dangerous. I know someone who was shot after attending his father’s funeral,” he recounted.

Agalga acknowledged the current government’s engagement efforts, citing President John Mahama’s outreach to the Nayiri in Nalerigu and the Bawku Naba following his swearing-in this January. Both leaders reportedly committed to supporting the mediation process.

“Otumfuo has already met with both sides. Further discussions are expected, and it’s crucial that we all support these efforts for lasting peace,” Agalga emphasized.

He appealed to the Kusasi community and all residents of Bawku to remain calm and allow the mediation efforts to unfold. “I understand the frustration, but real peace takes time, dialogue, and patience. Eventually, justice and peace will prevail,” he said.

He also urged the security services in the area to act impartially and with professionalism. “Security forces must operate with neutrality to rebuild trust with the community,” he advised.

Agalga concluded with a call for collective action: “This is no longer a local issue—it’s a national crisis. We need the involvement of traditional leaders, politicians, community elders, and security services to resolve it together.”

The case revolves around a Koforidua High Court’s decision that barred Kumi from holding himself as an MP and later found him guilty of contempt for defying the injunction.Kumi's lawyer, Gary Nimako Marfo, argued that the High Court judge erred by relying on a news article instead of an official gazette notification from the Electoral Commission (EC) when making its decision. He also claimed that the court ignored their pending applications to challenge its jurisdiction and still convicted Kumi for contempt. However, the lawyer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Henry Boakye Yiadom, disagreed, stating that there was no legal requirement for a hard copy of the gazette […]
