Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, on Friday, April 10, advocated for the establishment of a World Bank regional office in Accra. The proposal was made during a high-level meeting with Mr. Wencai Zhang, Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of the World Bank Group, held at the Ministry of Finance in Accra.
The discussions centered on enhancing Ghana’s collaboration with the World Bank, particularly in critical sectors such as agriculture, transport, and energy. Dr. Adam emphasized the importance of these sectors for Ghana’s long-term economic transformation and urged for increased support to tackle sectoral challenges and drive impact.
According to Dr. Adam, setting up a regional office in Accra would improve project execution not just in Ghana but across the entire West African region. “The presence of a World Bank regional office in Ghana would enable closer engagement, faster decision-making, and better development outcomes,” he noted.
Mr. Zhang expressed the World Bank’s readiness to strengthen its partnership with Ghana, with a particular focus on agriculture. Highlighting the Bank’s deep expertise in the sector, he affirmed support for boosting agricultural productivity, reducing post-harvest losses, and empowering local farmers.
He also acknowledged ongoing World Bank-backed projects in Ghana’s energy sector aimed at improving electricity access and reliability for both residential and industrial users.
The visit marks a continuation of strategic dialogue between Ghana and the World Bank to accelerate shared development priorities and uplift the quality of life for citizens.
